But it was in me that I had to show them.

After school I trained as a school teacher and worked in the private education sector for a few years, at one point I fell into the “8-16 ditch”. I think there are a lot of people out there who dream of doing something else, but you get caught up in everyday life with a fixed salary, a canteen scheme and pension savings. Then my day could at most consist of “walk and talk” meetings and office work, -and that was it.

It could continue for the rest of my life, but I had an urge to let it go and throw myself into a more unpredictable world, and then deep down I felt a desire to also get a "craft education".

As I said, most of my family is educated in the classic crafts. I had a softer approach to the concept of craftsmanship, but there was definitely something that tingled in my hands to get started. My father was both a carpenter and a joiner, and I could see how finely he could make tiny details and how rough it could be. It was something in that style that suited me, so it is probably an expression of a kind of social heritage – in a way – that in 2015 I started a new education as a masseuse.

You see and talk to many people who say "Oh, I have a little pain here, can't you just press there or do something?" but I have always denied it, and always meant that "You shouldn't let someone who doesn't have the education cut your hair". You should respect the professionally trained. Even though there was something in my hands that could sense when people were tense. It sometimes happens when they just walk past me.

But I didn't want to do anything until I had an education, and with the good and very thorough education from AM Massage School, I knew that I had a stepping stone to be able to do something else professionally at a later date. Physiological massage is a basic education and the way in for me to use my hands, so I could later take more supplementary education.

Because everything I do is about both learning and acquiring something new. Learning is one of the most important things for me, because otherwise you get stuck in your mindset and it becomes a hard task to get up in the morning.

What are your specialties?

I have my special educational massages, where I take care of those who have a little extra challenges, such as anxiety, stress or more specific diagnoses, where the approach is just different than the purely physical. My specialty is to read what is needed to give the client a better understanding of the body when the treatment is over. It is therefore not so much a focus on the individual and precise injury, but more on the whole.

How are you as a masseuse?

It all depends on how the client is and feels. I have my special education as my focus, so I am very interested in how people receive what I give and what I feel in them. As a masseuse, I can easily treat "sciatica nerves" all day, have fun with it and make people happy. But basically I see myself as someone who also tries to get people to understand why it hurts right here. When I then press in a completely different place, there is actually a connection with the problem the client has. I want to give the clients an understanding of why it hurts. My very deep presses are also to give the client peace.

There was once a client who said "You seem so soft and press so hard." That's the kind of masseuse I am.

What are your best experiences?

The first thing that comes to mind is something I have actually experienced several times. These are elderly clients whose loved ones have been seriously ill, where the partner may be on their way to or already in hospice. The relatives' focus is naturally on the sick person, but the spouse who is by their side and is supposed to support them has been somewhat forgotten during this time – and has also forgotten himself a little. "It's terrible that my husband/wife feels this way and that way". When they come by the clinic with a mild headache or a stiff back, I quickly find out that it may actually stem from the lack of care from the outside world for them in the situation they are in now. So often I run a slightly longer course, where we actually talk about something completely different during the treatment, where we try to get the individual back on track, in order to be there for the sick person again.

I've experienced that a few times, and it's one of the most amazing things in the world. From the initial treatment, when you say that there's a deeply unhappy person lying there, to my client also finding space for himself in his life.

As I said, it's a fantastic experience, and it also gives me a better life.

Her kan du i en lille interviewserie komme lidt tættere på Helse-og Idrætsklinikkens behandlere.
