In Denmark, many Danes suffer from chronic pain. The chronic pain most often occurs in the muscles, skeleton and joints. The typical chronic pain is most often felt as neck or back pain.
Chronic pain and physiology
Pain is a signal from our body that something is wrong and that we are about to cause ourselves harm. Physiologically, pain occurs at different levels in the body. The skeleton contains billions of small receptors that register everything that affects the body from the inside and outside. It comes as different signals; touch, pressure, pain, temperature, vibration, etc. This information is sent to the spine and from there up towards the head, to areas in the brain that interpret the information. From here, a reaction is then sent out to the body.
Chronic pain is invisible!
Chronic pain is of course very physically distressing, but it is also very psychologically distressing. Chronic pain patients can often feel like they have to justify everything in relation to the disease. It can be socially crippling, and many become lonely and often depressed.
Where massage can relieve the pain, psychotherapy can help with the psychological discomfort.
Psychotherapy is cool and gives raw strength!
It requires serious effort, but it is worth taking on the challenge because it creates strength in our body, mind, and close relationships.
Psychotherapy can contribute to:
– to find life force and strength
– to live life a little easier
– to change an inappropriate pattern/change
– to give space to fill
