Somatic Experiencing®
Physical and mental balance can be regained after crises, shocks and traumas.
Overwhelming experiences such as violence, loss, accidents, surgeries, falls, and family/social crises affect the body and nervous system. This can impair quality of life for many years afterward.
Symptoms may include:
- PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder)
- Memory difficulties
- Concentration problems
- Depressive states
- Chronic pain
- Anxiety and phobias
- Sleep problems
It is possible to heal the consequences of crises, shocks and traumas, regardless of whether they are acute or long-standing.
Shock and trauma often become “stuck” in the organism, causing us to react as if the danger is still present. We may find ourselves constantly on guard or feel helpless and overwhelmed. This affects our development and joy of life.
With the Somatic Experiencing ® method, it is possible to release the instinctive reactions that are frozen in the body. The therapist guides a sensory process that gently supports the nervous system's natural ability to move from stress to balance.
The Somatic Experiencing ® method was developed by the American Dr. Peter Levine Ph.D. in medical biophysics and psychology. He is best known in Denmark for the book “Wake Up the Tiger”, Borgen, 1998.
Peter Levine developed the method based on the overwhelming energy that accumulates in the body in life-threatening situations. We humans possess the same natural instincts that can be used to heal the after-effects of shock and trauma.
