Tension in your neck and shoulders after your car holiday? Here's your summer rescue

A summer road trip offers freedom, experiences and often many hours in the car. But even though you enjoy getting away, it's not uncommon to come home with a stiff neck, sore shoulders and a feeling of restlessness in your body.

Driving for hours, poor sitting positions and lack of movement put a strain on the body, especially in the neck and shoulder area. That's why it's important to give your body some care - and this is where..., Gua Sha and wellness massage can work wonders.

In this blog post we dive into:

  • Why tension in the neck and shoulders occurs during car trips

  • How you can prevent it in the future

  • What Gua Sha and wellness massage does – and why it works

  • How to book a treatment with us in Lyngby

What happens to the body during a long road trip?

When you sit in a car for a long time – either as a driver or a passenger – your body is in a static position. It is not designed to sit still in the same position for several hours. This means that certain muscles are constantly working to stabilize your body and head, while others become completely inactive.

Typical problems when driving:

  • Tension in the neck, especially around the neck muscles and the small muscles at the edge of the skull

  • Pain between the shoulder blades, because you sink into the seat

  • Shoulder fatigue, because they are easily lifted while driving

  • Headache, which often stems from tension in the neck/shoulder area

Many people don't notice the discomfort during the holidays – but as soon as you get home, your body starts to feel tense and sore.

What can you do yourself?

Although we can't always avoid long car trips, we can reduce the risk of tension:

  1. Take breaks along the way
    – Get out and walk around at least once an hour. Loosen your shoulders and stretch your neck.

  2. Sit well.
    – Use a neck pillow, position your lower back properly, and make sure the seat supports your back.

  3. Listen to your body
    – If you feel restlessness or tension in your neck, take it seriously.

  4. Drink water and avoid caffeine in large quantities
    – Dehydration increases the risk of muscle tension.

But once the tensions have taken hold, you may need professional treatment to completely get rid of them.

Gua Sha – gentle but effective treatment

Gua Sha originates from traditional Chinese medicine and is a technique in which a smooth tool is gently scraped across the skin. It increases blood flow, loosens connective tissue and reduces muscle tension – all without pain.

  • Stiff neck and tired shoulders

  • Restlessness in the body after days of travel

  • Headaches and facial tension

  • General relaxation and increased well-being

The treatment is relaxing., and many experience both physical and mental relief after the first time.
