‘'Massage' covers many different approaches, techniques and intensities. And it can seem a bit confusing when you have to choose – do you want a classic massage, a sports massage, a deep-tissue massage or something completely different?
Here's a simple guide to the most common types – and when each one is right for you.
Swedish massage – the classic relaxation massage
Swedish massage is what most people imagine when they hear the word ‘massage.’ It uses long, sliding strokes, kneading, and light kneading to loosen muscles, improve blood circulation, and provide general relaxation.
What is Swedish massage good for?
- General muscle soreness and stiffness
- Stress reduction and relaxation
- Improved sleep
- The feeling of 'resetting' the body
It is gentle to moderate in intensity and is well suited for those who do not have specific pain issues, but who want to care for and pamper their body.
Physiotherapy massage – the professional holistic treatment
Physiotherapy massage is a medically based type of massage that systematically works with the body's muscles and connective tissue. It combines techniques from Swedish massage with more targeted treatment of specific issues.
At the Health & Sports Clinic, Jan Nordkvist is a medically qualified physiotherapist – and physiotherapy massage is the core of most treatments at the clinic.
Physiotherapy massage is suitable for you who:
- Do you have specific pain or tension you want to treat?
- Want a therapist who works goal-oriented and professionally
- Wants both relief and prevention
Sports massage – for active people and athletes
Sports massage is aimed at athletes and physically active people. It works with the specific muscle groups that are stressed during your sport, and focuses on:
- Preventing injuries
- Accelerate recovery after training or competition
- Treat acute and chronic sports injuries
- Optimize muscle function and mobility
Sports massage is typically more intensive than classic massage and may hurt a little during the treatment - a 'good pain' that shows that you are working with the right thing.
Who is it for?
Runners, cyclists, team players, fitness enthusiasts – anyone who is physically active and wants to take care of their body and perform better.
Deep massage – for those who need more
Deep tissue massage combines physiotherapy massage with acupressure, trigger point therapy and connective tissue therapy. It reaches layers of muscle and connective tissue that are not reached with classic techniques.
Deep tissue massage is relevant for:
- Chronic muscle tension that does not respond to light massage
- Deep myositis and trigger points with radiating pain
- Sciatica and piriformis syndrome
- Long-term lower back and neck pain
The treatment can be felt – but most people experience significant relief afterwards.
