Practitioner performs reflexology on the sole of the foot at Helse- og Idrætsklinikken

Foot massage or reflexology: what's the difference?

Our feet carry us all day long, but are often the last thing we think about when it comes to taking care of our bodies. Both regular foot massage and reflexology work with the feet, but in their own way and with their own purposes.

What is regular foot massage?

Regular foot massage works with the muscles, tendons and connective tissue in and around the foot. The primary purpose is to:

  • Loosen tight foot muscles after a day on your feet, in shoes or after exercise
  • Improve local blood circulation
  • Provide general relaxation and well-being

This is the type of massage that most people know and associate with a stay at a spa or as part of a full-body treatment.

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is based on a different way of thinking. It works on the theory that certain points (zones) on the foot are connected to certain organs and systems in the rest of the body. By stimulating these zones through systematic pressure, the aim is to support the body's own balance and well-being, not just to treat the foot itself.

The treatment is therefore more targeted and systematic than a regular foot massage, and is based on a fixed route across the foot. See more about our reflex zone treatment of hands and feet.

What can reflexology be used for?

Many people seek reflexology to support:

  • General relaxation and stress reduction
  • Better sleep
  • The feeling of surplus in a stressful period
  • Well-being during pregnancy (in consultation with the practitioner)

It is important to be clear that reflexology is a supplement to well-being and balance, not a substitute for medical treatment.

When should you choose what?

  • Do you want to relieve tired, sore feet after a long day: choose a regular foot massage.
  • If you want a more systematic, relaxing and holistic treatment: choose reflexology.
  • If in doubt: tell your therapist what you would like to achieve so that together you can find the right approach.

What can you expect during a treatment?

Both treatments are typically performed sitting or lying down, with the foot slightly elevated. A session usually lasts 30-45 minutes. Most people find the treatment deeply relaxing, and some may become sleepy during the treatment, which is completely normal.

An obvious gift idea

Both foot massage and reflexology are popular as gifts, especially around Christmas, when many people appreciate a little peace and quiet during a busy period. We offer gift card, which the recipient can use for the treatment that suits them best.
